Her team took care of coordinating with the movers, handling no parking signs and ALLLLL the packing and unpacking. (They even did thoughtful things, such as reach out to neighbors.) I am so thankfully I was able to work with Jamee for 9 months last year as I was preparing to relocate to Massachusetts. I have a lot of stuff and it was a disorganized mess. Jamee was great to work with. She was very patient and non judgemental. We got so much done each visit! She helped me get rid of trash and donations. She hooked me up with green Drop in Friendship Heights and inspired me to do some donations even on days I was not working with her. I don't know how I could have handle getting ready for the move without her. Now that I am in Massachusetts, I wish I could find someone even 10% as great to help me get settled in. Shannon was terrific, working under a challenging situation—conducting a long-distance Facetime inventory, working to clarify and classify a decidedly disorganized estate, overseeing careful packing of vintage concert posters and music memorabilia, as well as personal belongings going into storage after a long-time friend's move to a nursing home. She never made assumptions but checked with me as to identifications and such, and made sure everything was clearly catalogued. And she also made sure that when the materials were moved into the storage unit, they were organized for easy access. Lots of photos as well, to make things even clearer. Parents often look forward to having the house to themselves when the last child finally takes off on their own. That is until they realize that the house feels empty without the kids rambling through it.

The right time to downsize will be up to you.

Many new empty nesters choose to downsize right away so they can begin to make new memories on their own. Others may choose to wait for a while, especially if the kids visit and want to stay at home.

No matter when you choose to downsize the home itself, you can choose to start eliminating items you no longer use at any time. 

Downsizing is definitely worth it if you look at it in terms of your budget and the amount of work you have to put into caring for your home.

If it’s only the two of you, moving into a smaller home will save you money in many ways. Selling your larger home and purchasing a smaller one may offer you a tidy profit that you can invest in your retirement.
