Feeling truly at home in a new house doesn’t happen instantly, but a well organized move-in will get you there quickly and avoid unnecessary stress. After the moving van has driven away, here are the dos and don’ts we have learned over the years to fast track the process of turning your new purchase into a real home.

1. Start With Key Rooms

The kitchen and bathrooms are crucial. Trying to unpack and organize an entire house in a day or two isn’t realistic and will wear you out.

2. Focus On Safety

Change the locks, check the windows, change the batteries in the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and child proof any hazards to your kids.

3. Do the Kids’ Bedrooms First

If the children are happy, parents are happy. Older children may be eager to help which is a win-win.

4. Prioritize Home Offices/Remote Learning Spaces

Setting them up is the next priority so normal life can resume quickly.

5. Pitch the Boxes

As you unpack, get rid of those boxes cluttering up your space and stressing you out.

6. Meet the Neighbors

This will help your family feel at home. Check out the community hot spots, introduce yourself to some neighbors, and look for ways to get involved. If you have kids, this is especially important.

7. Organize as You Put Away

Resist the temptation to throw things into closets. Slow down and put like items together in an organized fashion. You’ll thank yourself later!

8. The Art Can Wait

There are more important things to do in the first week, and perhaps it’s best to live in the house for a while before deciding on art placement.

9. Take a Break

Treat yourself to some time off from the move tasks. Even simple activities can do the trick. Try going to the park, planning a hike, or reading a book in your backyard.
