Organizational skills aid learning in so many ways. Even just following directions requires one to focus on the task at hand and develop a plan. There are simple things you can do at home that will help your child be a better organizer. As an added bonus, your house will look great!
Manage backpacks – Put an end to crumpled assignments, unread school announcements, uneaten food, and lost keys or money. Establish a backpack station in your home and agree upon a time every day to sift through papers and supplies.
Declutter kid spaces – Remove as many distractions as possible by decluttering. These spaces may include your child’s room and the den where he/she studies. Even the video gaming area should be well organized.
Create a planning area – Keep a family calendar and plan out the week every Sunday night. Meal planning is a great way to reduce back-and-forth when it comes to dinnertime.
Establish a homework routine – Designate a comfortable work space with no distractions, as well as a set time to do homework. It doesn’t matter if it’s the kitchen table, your child’s bedroom, or your home office as long as your child is getting his or her work done! Keep a supply of pens, pencils, paper, and any other materials needed for homework assignments on hand.
Prepare backpacks the night before – Your children’s backpacks should be organized as soon as homework is done. Have them get used to planning for the next day—ensure their lunch and any school equipment (e.g., sports gear, musical instruments, etc.) are ready to go.
Be a role model – Expecting children to organize themselves is unrealistic in a cluttered home. As the saying goes, have a place for everything and everything in its place!
